1st Nephi 1 : 1
I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevertheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days.
Hey, I’m Nephi. Growing up I had pretty decent parents. At least they taught me to read and write. Came in handy when I was commanded to record my life story for posterity. Two-fifths of my brothers won’t endorse this version of events, but at the moment they’re busy sinning, so I wouldn’t hold my breath for their side of the story. (It would be fiction, anyway.) Speaking of Lame and Lamer, sometimes I wonder why God didn’t let us leave them in Jerusalem. But I suppose I can’t complain too much. Being on God’s Varsity Team has its perks. Not to mention responsibilities. Like recording my spiritual insight for some mysterious purpose. I don’t pretend to know everything about Heavenly Father’s plan. But I do know this much: God knows what He’s doing and as cheesy as it sounds, He wants what’s best for us.
